Girl poisoned to death for `honour'
RAYACHOTI (Kadapa): In what could be yet another case of honour killing in the state, a 19-year-old girl was allegedly poisoned to death by her father for her love affair with a youth. The girl's body was found buried in a graveyard close to her residence in Rayachoti in Kadapa district on Monday.
Following a tip-off, the police rushed to the graveyard and exhumed the body. The victim was identified as Rupa, daughter of Sivarama Chari, 50, a head master in the zilla parishad high school in Devapatla village in Sandepalli mandal.
Sources said the parents forced Rupa to consume the food mixed with poison on Sunday night. Later in the night, they buried her in the graveyard near their house. They were upset with Rupa for having an affair with the youth belonging to another community. "In spite of several warnings from her parents, the girl continued her affair. Chari even stopped her education after Intermediate and confined her to the house when Rupa refused to give up her love," sources said.
When contacted, Chari denied the allegations and said his daughter died of epilepsy. "She had severe fits on Sunday and died. We buried her in the graveyard, which is close to our house," he said. Chari has two wives.
Meanwhile, police have sent the body for an autopsy. "Once we get the autopsy report, we will take action. We have started investigation," a police official said. Chari has not been arrested yet.
