Husband of N.P. school official accused of child abuse
NORTH PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The husband of school committee member Gina Picard is facing charges of second-degree child abuse after being accused of throwing his 9-year-old son across a room, causing him to land face-first against the leg of a piano bench.
The police said Patrick K. Picard, 38, of 6 Hickory Rd., was released on $20,000 personal recognizance, hours after his arrest on Oct. 6 on the felony assault charge, and has been ordered to appear in court on Dec. 8.
A nurse at the Stephen Olney School initially notified the state Department of Children, Youth & Families after the boy showed up at school with a swollen nose and black eyes.
Police said the parents were arguing over a fundraiser when the father allegedly assaulted the boy, thinking he was laughing at him.
Gina Picard said Tuesday said the whole matter was a "misunderstanding" and that she believed the family could deal with the matter privately.
