ATLANTA - Human trafficking is one of the most shocking crimes occurring in Georgia, and chances are you don't even know it exists. It is so prevalent that a house bill was recently passed to increase penalties for convictions.

In the 20th Century Fox movie Taken, Liam Neeson is a father who goes through great lengths to rescue his daughter from a slave trade operation. The movie about children being used as sex slaves was fiction, but for Atlanta native Keisha Head, the story was all too real.

"Anytime a person is sold and treated as an object like you're not a human being, you're treated like an animal. So I cannot even put a word to describe how that feels," said Head.

She was once a victim of domestic minor sex trafficking. After running away at 16, she met a man who very quickly bought and sold her.

"A lot of people want to say it's modern day slavery, but this has been happening forever," said Head.

According to the FBI, Atlanta is a hub for human trafficking -- where sex or labor is forced, and it's not just a city problem. In a Gwinnett County suburb, a woman was convicted of beating two women and making them work without pay.

"Both of the victims testified that the victims' fathers came from Nigeria to tell how the young women were brought here under false promises, and friends and relatives of the defendant testified who had witnessed this abuse," said assistant U. S. attorney Susan Coppedge.

Head says what happened to her can happen to your child, and ignoring the problem won't make it go away.

"Now with the rise of the internet, predators have access to your children so it is more prevalent. You don't have to be a runaway, just a 13-year-girl your computer screen and still get trafficked," said Head.

The US Department of Justice reported that every two minutes a child is trafficked for the purpose of sexual exploitation in the United States. According to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, 750-1,500 juveniles are at risk for trafficking in a single US state each year.


Parents, stepparents or guardians force their children to perform sex acts in exchange for money or items of value. Often, they abuse their children themselves. "I was being sexually abused. I would be abused by the people that I lived with, but they were also bringing people in to do that as well," recalls a sex victim who was abused throughout her childhood. "Normally it's in places where there's lots of people, anytime when there's a ball game like a football game," the girl adds who is hiding her identity for safety.

Sex abusers involved in child sex trafficking are ordinary people from the neighborhood, they lead normal lives, participate in community activities and often go to church. They force their children to take addictive drugs and usually threaten them. “It happens every single day in every neighborhood. They're people who look good but they aren't who they say they are," said the victim, adding "you do not understand the mind control that they put over a human being… It's slavery".

In 2011 the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) revealed a study that showed there were more than 100 cases reported of child sex trafficking in Knox County in the U.S. State of Tennessee. TBI Assistant Special Agent in Charge Margie Quin says child sex trafficking is increasing, possibly due to photos and ads online. "If there's a demand, that demand is going to be met. And if there's money to be made, and there's a tremendous amount of money to be made in child sex trafficking, then it's going to occur," said Quin.

Our beaurocracy is one of the worst in world so no wonder when we discover that underneath of Incredible India most of our population lives under the poverty line, child exploitation, women exploitation and sex slavery is still exists and is on rise. Yes officially it is illegal but unofficially this crime is going on and no one really bothers to put a full stop on it.

We just can’t put whole blame on our government; even as a citizen we also hold some sort of responsibility but unfortunately don’t do anything about it. Everyone here is too busy in their own materialistic life that they don’t have time to raise their voices against wrong doing of our society and our government.

So much happen every day and that also just around the corner of our homes but we never ever bothered to raise our finger. Our attitude “Sab Chalta Hai” (everything is ok) is letting India down and putting our image at stake.

TIMES NOW exposes the shocking truth behind child trafficking in India, follows the trail of 200 children picked up in Manipur and exploited in Chennai.

Priya Devi is only nine years old. But she is one of two hundred children in Manipur promised a better life but cheated in the end finding themselves taken away to southern most parts of India far away from home, alieanted and trapped in a world of abuse and hard labour. TIMES NOW exposes the trail from Manipur to Chennai to Bangalore.

She is only nine years old but she’s seen more injustice that many have seen in a lifetime.

Priya, 9-yr-old rescued from Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu, said, “I was taken by a man from my home promising me education. But when I got there, they made me work.”

The men promised to give Priya a better life but four years later, her parents are devastated that their trust was betrayed.

The parents said, “Consider our poverty and concern for her future, we had decided to send her to get good education but what has happened is totaling contrasting.”

TIMES NOW was there when Priya was released along with 16 other children last month and with it began a rlentless chase to expose the shocking truth.

Case of Child traffickers:.

Rani, 17 years.

Rani is from Majhasaur village, Mirzapur district of Varanasi. Her father had expired and her mother unable to look after the family had tried to poison the family. Rani and her siblings survived the attempt, however her mother expired. She was married off to a 40-year-old man. In reality she was sold to him for Rs. 10,000. When Rani went to the police to complain about her land being taken over by the villagers, the police sexually abused her. She was given Rs. 1000 by the police stating that he would help her. Rani was introduced to people who pulled her into the racket of child trafficking. She was sent to various places such as Banaras, Azamgarh Ambedekar Nagar and Allahabad etc.

CHILDINE Varanasi received a call from RPF Inspector informing about having found a 17 year old at the Varanasi Cantonment railway station. The girl was brought to the CHILDLINE office by one of the team members.

The details of the case were handed over to the CWC. The next phase was to contact the Superintendent of Police. A raid was organized and the child trafficking racket was cracked down. Four men and three women involved in the racket were arrested.
After rescue, Rani was temporarily kept at a Girl's home in Lucknow and subsequently rehabilitated with her elder sister.
