Villagers boycott kin of rape accused
COIMBATORE: Behind its pastoral quiet, balmy Angalakurichi is now a village seething with fury.
Till a fortnight ago, the village nestled at the foothills of Anamalai, was locally known only for its coconut farms and people stringing bright marigolds. A tranquil village of 2,500 families, Angalakurichi had seen few crimes and criminalsmuch less a shocking case of rape and murder. But on the searing afternoon of October 29, Angalakurichi shot into spotlightfor the wrong reasons.
Two natives of the villagecab driver Mohana Krishnan and his friend, Manoharan, a tractor driver, allegedly raped a schoolgirl from Coimbatore on the soil of Angalakurichi and drowned her along with her little brother in the canal near the village.
And two days after the cab driver was shot down by the Coimbatore police in an encounter, the village is in no mood to "pardon" even the kin of the "notorious natives."
The angry villagers have asked the parents of the tractor driver, Manoharan, who along with the cab driver, allegedly murdered the two children, to leave Angalakurichi.
The one-room tiled house of Manoharan, who is now lodged in Coimbatore prison, is now locked. Panchayat president of Angalakurichi C Dhanalakshmi has ordered Manoharans parents Ramasamy and Selvi, to leave the village immediately. They were eking out a living hawking flowers at the hill retreat of Valparai, but they are too scared to emerge from their house to buy groceries too. A lock hangs outside their front door, but they quietly remain inside the house.
"The villagers do not want Manoharan's parents to stay in the village any more. It is a collective decision taken by the villagers, who want to see Manoharans family out of the village for bringing disgrace to the village by committing this heinous crime, the panchayat chief told TOI.
The family has been denied groceries and other essentials by shopkeepers. "Ten persons from the Kongu Munnetra Peravai came to house and threatened the family. They asked the family to leave the village or face dire consequences, Satish Kumar, a neighbour, said.
Villagers said he was married six months ago but his wife separated within four months of the marriage. "Manoharanused to drink and quarrel with his wife. That's why she left, a neighbour K Muthusamy.
On October 29, Mohana Krishnan came to meet Manoharan in a car carrying two children. Manoharan left with Mohana Krishnan and never returned.
The villagers only regret is that they could not "save the innocent children. If only the children had cried for help, we would have rescued them," R Dorai, a farmer said.
