NRI detained with Rs 25-crore heroin
Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) sleuths on Wednesday recovered five kilogram of heroin worth Rs 25 crore in the international black market from an NRI at the Rajasansi International airport here.
The NRI, one Hardeep Singh, was cornered when he was about to take Air India’s Amritsar-Toronto flight. He had recently arrived from Canada and was staying at a private hotel in Jalandhar for the past few days.
The heroin was not detected by the Customs Departmen’s x-ray scanners. Hardeep was in the queue to board the aircraft when the DRI officials detained him and on checking, found the heroin in his suitcase cavities.
Airport sources said there were lapses on the part of the Customs Department as his baggage was cleared for boarding.
Hardeep hails from Hoshiarpur and investigations are on if he had carried narcotics to Canada earlier as well.
