CHILD TRAFFICKING AND CHILD ABUSE HAS TO COME TO AN END.

Trafficking in children is a global problem affecting large numbers of children. Some estimates have as many as 1.2 million children being trafficked every year. There is a demand for trafficked children as cheap labour or for sexual exploitation. Children and their families are often unaware of the dangers of trafficking, believing that better employment and lives lie in other countries.

New schemes to make women make grade, earn jobs

New schemes to make women make grade, earn jobs
Gaining confidence: One of the women empowerment initiatives.

Thiruvananthapuram, Oct. 7

The Kerala State Women's Development Corporation (KSWDC) has launched itself on a new drive that aims to help women ‘make the grade' on their way to empowerment in the emerging new India.

Disclosing this to newspersons here on Thursday, Mr Sunish P.T., Managing Director, KSWDC, said that this is sought to be achieved mainly through two new flagship programmes launched already.

PIONEERING EFFORT

These relate to a professional grooming academy for women claimed to be the first of its kind in the public sector and an increasingly interactive programme on gender awareness among students and adults alike.

Resource Enhancement Academy for Career Heights (Reach) is a pioneering professional grooming academy that focuses on re-engineering career aspirations into proper designs. The corporation has analysed existing demand pull on sector-specific jobs in the State and is offering to Plus-Two students and graduates short-term courses.

They range from IELTS (International English Language Testing System), professional grooming of B Ed graduates, customer care executives and office assistants at competent rates.

FREE FOR BPL

Courses are free for the BPL category of aspirants for whom 70 per cent of the seats have been reserved with an assured 100 per cent placement. The Reach programme was qualified for ISO 9001-2000 certification within three months of inception.

Gender awareness is sought to be raised from the realisation that 50 per cent of the seats in local bodies and a likely 33 per cent in higher bodies of legislature is being reserved for women in stages.

According to Mr Sunish, this would make huge demand on capacity building among women in order to make available adequately qualified to handle the difficult job of decision-making at the high levels.

EMPOWERING WOMEN

Empowerment would become more relevant if women are educated, better informed and can take rational decisions.

Empowerment would not hold any meaning unless women are made strong, alert and aware of their equal status in the society.

The KSWDC has decided to go to schools and women's colleges to ‘catch them young' and train.

In this connection, an expert committee was constituted under Dr M.K.C. Nair, Director, Child Development Centre, Government of Kerala, to finalise the script for a video programme on adolescent girls. Post-production works on the documentary are currently progressing, Mr Sunish said. On completion, the film will be screened at all rural schools.

VARIOUS TIE-UPS

Among other initiatives are tie-ups with Tally India and IT education major NIIT.

The first one aims to train 1,250 girls from the BPL category in Tally accounting applications with an offer for placement to the extent of 80 per cent at an average monthly salary of Rs 6,800.

The corporation is the in the final stages of executing the agreement with Tally India, Mr Sunish said. The tie-up with NIIT will seek to provide interest-free loans to candidates selected for various courses.

“NIIT is offering 100 per cent placement for those who successfully complete the training. In fact, the offer holds good from the day students get assigned for the training,” he added.
