Trafficking in children is a global problem affecting large numbers of children. Some estimates have as many as 1.2 million children being trafficked every year. There is a demand for trafficked children as cheap labour or for sexual exploitation. Children and their families are often unaware of the dangers of trafficking, believing that better employment and lives lie in other countries.

Youth arrested for attempted rape of minor

PUNE: The Warje Malwadi police on Saturday arrested a 23-year-old youth for allegedly trying to rape a nine-year-old girl. He had lured the victim on the pretext of showing her some photographs on his cell phone. The incident took place at Warje on September 16. 

The police have identified the suspect as Mahesh Ramesh Mate of Warje. Mate was produced before the court on Saturday and remanded to police custody till September 22. 

N R Jagtap of Warje Malwadi police station said that the suspect Mate on September 16 around 7 pm, called the victim in an empty room near his residence on the pretext of showing her some photographs. "The victim was accompanied by some other children. After showing them the photographs, the suspect asked the other children to leave. He then attempted to rape the victim," Jagtap said. 

He added that the victim somehow managed to flee. She narrated the entire incident to her mother. "After discussing with the relatives, her mother lodged the complaint with the police late in the night," Jagtap said. 

He said that after receiving the complaint the suspect was arrested under section 376 (for rape) of the Indian Penal Code.
