NAVI MUMBAI: A teacher of a reputed English-medium school in Kalamboli was on Wednesday arrested on charges of raping a seven-year-old student.
Kalamboli police officials said the incident took place on June 21 on the campus of St Joseph High School and involved a 32-year-old teacher, Firoze Ibrahim, and a third-standard student. Ibrahim allegedly forced the girl to come with him to one of the rooms in the school during lunch break and committed the crime.
Police officials did not disclose more details about the crime, but they are reportedly on the lookout for a second school employee who is believed to have assisted Ibrahim in committing the rape.
After reaching her home on Monday, the girl complained to her parents, who immediately approached the police. “The victim’s statement has been taken and a medical test is being conducted. Further probe is on,’’ a police official said, adding that the parents of the victim had requested them not to speak to the media about the case details.
Trafficking in children is a global problem affecting large numbers of children. Some estimates have as many as 1.2 million children being trafficked every year. There is a demand for trafficked children as cheap labour or for sexual exploitation. Children and their families are often unaware of the dangers of trafficking, believing that better employment and lives lie in other countries.
