CHILD TRAFFICKING AND CHILD ABUSE HAS TO COME TO AN END.

Trafficking in children is a global problem affecting large numbers of children. Some estimates have as many as 1.2 million children being trafficked every year. There is a demand for trafficked children as cheap labour or for sexual exploitation. Children and their families are often unaware of the dangers of trafficking, believing that better employment and lives lie in other countries.

Girls lured to death, Deccan Cronicle.

Girls lured to death, Deccan Cronicle.

Recently, an engineering graduate slit his former girlfriend’s throat after she refused to have anything to do with him. Luckily the girl survived. However, Divya was not as lucky. The unsuspecting girl who visited her ex boyfriend in Vanasthalipuram at his insistence was clubbed to death with a baseball bat. Last year, a girl was pushed off a building in Begumpet by her male “friend” who later committed suicide.
Divya’s murder sent shockwaves among her college friends and her classmates are still reeling from her death. Prakash, a student of CSE-B who studied in Divya’s class, says, “The girls are very shocked. Initially, I didn’t believe news about her death until I saw the reports on TV. I knew about Shekar and her but none of us expected him to resort to anything like this. The atmosphere in the class is very dull now and the girls are visibly worried.”
Cases of jilted lovers killing women or throwing acid on them just don’t seem to die down. Unable to take “no” for an answer, these men trick their object of infatuation to meet them at particular places and physically attack them due to a negative answer.
Many of the cases that are not as serious as murder or acid throwing — but are heinous all the same — often go unreported as women are traditionally “soft at heart.” But what is alarming is the gullibility of these girls who continue to stay in touch with their ex.
Venkat Rao, Divya’s uncle feels that like most girls, she was not gullible. She fell for a well-thought out lie that Shekar made up. He says. “Shekar had been harassing Divya constantly. He tricked her to come to his place after assuring her that this was the last time he’d meet her. He led her to believe that he had got married to someone else and hence wanted to meet one last time. She went to meet him, believing the lie. Who wouldn’t believe such a story? I don’t think girls are gullible.”
Psychiatrists ,however, do insist that girls are more gullible than boys. Dr Minhaj Nasirabadi, consultant psychiatrist, Apollo Hospitals, says, “If a boy takes a girl into confidence then it’s easy for him to dupe her. Girls tend to develop blind faith in the boy they confide in. They may not voice harassment to evade questions from society, hence they bear the brunt. A girl must not wait till the boy harms her to raise an alarm.”
Pranati was attacked by a jilted lover who threw acid on her face in Warangal in 2008. She survived the attack and has moved on since. Her mother Subhashini, says, “My daughter has moved on with life and is currently working in Wipro in Hyderabad since the last two months.”
While girls should stop being gullible, a male stalker or a love interest who shows signs of unstable behaviour has to be reined in by reporting the case and not by merely withstanding it. “There have been reports of friends stalking girls and some girls have come forward to register complaints. Girls can call the 1091 helpline or report to the cops under section 309 for eve teasing, which can lead to two years of imprisonment. If the boy has hurt the girl, she can report it under Section 324 of IPC. Such incidents must be reported immediately so that action can be taken,” says DCP Nagi Reddy, North Zone.
