CHILD TRAFFICKING AND CHILD ABUSE HAS TO COME TO AN END.

Trafficking in children is a global problem affecting large numbers of children. Some estimates have as many as 1.2 million children being trafficked every year. There is a demand for trafficked children as cheap labour or for sexual exploitation. Children and their families are often unaware of the dangers of trafficking, believing that better employment and lives lie in other countries.

Hyderabad, Sept. 17: India might be an aspirant superpower but the stark fact is that every second hungry person on earth is an Indian. And one out of two children in the country is undernourished.
A United Nations Development Programme report released on Friday states that India accounts for 50 per cent of the world’s hungry lot. Over 46 per cent of Indian children are undernourished.
Health too is a major challenge. During every 100,000 live births in India, 254 women die while the child is delivered. This is down from 327 in 1990 but still perturbing.
Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Uttaranchal have the highest maternal mortality ratio ranging from 480 to 312. Kerala at 95, Tamil Nadu at 111 and West Bengal at 141 have the best figures. Andhra Pradesh has a maternal mortality ratio of 154.
“Persistent inequalities, ineffective delivery of public services, weak accountability systems and gaps in the implementation of pro-poor policies are the major bottlenecks to progress,” said experts.
Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, MP, Maharashtra, Orissa, UP and Uttaranchal are unlikely to achieve the target of halving poverty by 2015.
