HYDERABAD: The enforcement wing of the excise department has decided to put two of its officials under scanner suspecting their nexus with drug mafia which came to light on Monday when peddlers were caught with one kg of Ephedrine at a city hotel. Ephedrine is manufactured by some private laboratories in and around Delhi and is used as a stimulant and decongestant.

A top official of the excise department told TOI that two excise inspectors were suspected to be involved in drug trafficking. Their phone numbers were found in the mobile phones seized from the arrested persons. Based on the information, the peddlers, when grilled, said that they had spoken to the officials before landing in the city with the drugs worth Rs 30 lakh. The matter was being investigated, the official said.

The two officials were asked to report to enforcement director Sunil Kumar immediately and were being questioned to ascertain their involvement in drug smuggling and their links with the mafia.

The accused, during interrogation, are learnt to have claimed to be maintaining close relations with the two officials for last two years. During their stay in the city, they used to meet the officials or speak to them on phone.

The official sources said as per the preliminary investigation drugs were being smuggled into the city from New Delhi and Gurgaon. The mafia apparently developed links with some police and excise officials to run their smuggling activity smoothly in the city.

The enforcement wing officials probing into the case also found that some excise officials bought valuable land and flats in benami names in New Delhi, Gurgaon and Noida. The authorities are now probing as to what prompted them to invest money in New Delhi and if it has anything to do with their alleged association with the drug peddlers operating in Hyderabad, the source added.
